All of our homes were named for historic, famous estates. Monticello is Italian for little mountain” and sits atop a hill in Albemarle County, Virginia. This spectacular residence was home for 40 years to Thomas Jefferson the third President of the United States. It is considered a national treasure for both its beauty and historical significance.

Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello is a masterpiece of neoclassical architecture nestled atop a hill in Charlottesville, Virginia. Designed by Jefferson himself, construction of the iconic house began in 1768 and continued for several decades, with ongoing modifications reflecting his evolving tastes and ideas. The architectural style of Monticello draws inspiration from classical Greek and Roman elements, characterized by its symmetrical facade, elegant proportions, and use of classical orders.

The main structure of Monticello features a distinctive dome crowning the central portion of the house, inspired by the Roman Pantheon. This serves both functional and aesthetic purposes, providing natural light to the rooms below and adding a unique visual element to the overall design. Jefferson’s keen interest in horticulture is also evident in Monticello’s integration with the surrounding landscape. The house is flanked by terraced gardens, orchards, and carefully planned dependencies that contribute to the harmony between architecture and nature.

Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello stands as a testament to his architectural prowess and intellectual pursuits, embodying the Enlightenment ideals of reason, order, and the integration of knowledge into daily life. The house remains a cherished national landmark, offering visitors a glimpse into the mind of one of America’s Founding Fathers and his innovative approach to architecture and living.
